DR. KIM RAHARJA, OD

Your Expert in Dry Eye Solutions

I’m Dr. Kim Raharja, an optometrist specializing in diagnosing and treating dry eyes. My approach combines a deep understanding of both optical and medical needs to provide comprehensive support. My goal is to relieve discomfort , improve your vision and enhance your eye health through a variety of advanced treatments and technologies tailored specifically for you. I will spend the extra time getting to the bottom of your eye discomfort.

How I Can Help

  • Personalized Treatment Plans:

    • Together, we will identify the specific type of dry eye you’re experiencing.

    • I will recommend tailored solutions, including:

      • Eye Drops: Once we identify what type of dry eyes you have, I will provide customized lubricants to soothe dryness and irritation. Since dry eyes can be multifactorial, your treatment plan may include a combination of therapies and drops to effectively address your unique needs.

      • Punctal Plugs: Small amounts of collagen or gel inserted into the tear ducts to help retain moisture and reduce tear loss.

      • Moisture Chamber Glasses: Special eyewear that creates a humid environment for your eyes, protecting them from irritants.

      • Night-Time Eye Protection: Gear designed to prevent moisture loss while you sleep.

      • Sclerals   A contact lens with a saline reservoir when you need more comfort and good vision.

      • In Office Treatments:  MGD, inflammation, red eyes, improving eye bags, muscle stimulation to improve droopy eyes. ptosis and mild eye bags.

      • I can recommend the best doctors around town if you need surgery.

Advanced Equipment

I use state-of-the-art technology to effectively assess and treat dry eyes:

  • OCULUS 5M: This advanced diagnostic tool measures tear film stability, evaluates dry eye severity, and assesses Demodex severity. It also captures images of your oil glands to evaluate meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), giving a complete picture of your eye health.

  • OptiLight: A light therapy system that employs specific wavelengths to reduce inflammation and boost tear production in those with dry eyes.

  • OptiLift: This system enhances eyelid function and comfort, promoting a healthy tear film. It helps strengthen and tone eyelid muscles for better blinking and can also assist with mild eye bags.

  • OptiPlus: A therapy tool that warms the oil glands for effective lid expression, which can also help reduce mild eye bags.

  • Intense Pulse Light Therapy: A non-invasive treatment that uses light pulses to decrease inflammation and improve meibomian gland function, enhancing tear quality.

  • Radiofrequency Treatments: This approach stimulates the eyelid glands to improve oil secretion, helping to enhance tear quality and reduce evaporative dry eye.

  • Dynamic Muscle Stimulation: A technique designed to strengthen the muscles around the eyes, improving eyelid function and alleviating dry eye symptoms.

  • Punctal Plugs: Small amounts of collagen or gel inserted into the tear ducts to help retain moisture and reduce tear loss.

  • Scleral Lenses: Specialized contact lenses that create a saline reservoir over the cornea, providing comfort and protection for those with severe dry eyes. Many times, these lenses are covered under insurance when we apply for medically necessary contacts, making them a viable option for patients seeking relief.

  • EyePrint PRO: A 3D printed scleral lens created from a mold impression of your eye. This highly accurate lens requires minimal adjustments, ensuring a comfortable fit for optimal vision.

  • Anterior Segment OCT: An imaging technology that provides detailed cross-sectional images of the anterior segment of the eye, allowing for thorough analysis of dry eye conditions. This technology also aids in achieving a better fit for scleral lenses in conjunction with the Eaglet Scleral Scanner.

  • Topcon Maestro: A multifunctional imaging device that delivers high-resolution images of both the retina and anterior segment, aiding in various eye condition diagnoses.

  • Eaglet Scleral Scanner: A device that accurately measures the shape and curvature of the eye, facilitating the design of custom scleral lenses for optimal fit and comfort.

  • Meibography: A diagnostic procedure that visualizes the meibomian glands in the eyelids, assessing their health and function, which is essential for tear film stability.

  • Tear Meniscus Assessment: An evaluation that determines tear volume and stability by examining the tear film meniscus.

  • Demodex Eyelash Analysis: A test that inspects eyelashes for Demodex mites, which can contribute to dry eye symptoms and eyelid inflammation.

  • Ovitiz Higher Order Aberrations Assessment: A diagnostic tool that measures higher order aberrations in the eye, helping to identify potential issues that affect visual clarity.

What Is Dry Eye
Syndrome?
(DES)

Red, inflamed eyes caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
Prescription dry eye medications including Xiidra, Xdemvy, Miebo, and Oxervate.

Dry Eye Syndrome happens when tear production and drainage are out of balance. This can lead to itching, burning, redness, excessive tearing, and even eye pain. Left untreated, it can worsen over time and increase the risk of serious issues like corneal ulcers.

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Gritty, itchy, or stinging eyes

  • Excessive tearing or discharge

  • Eyes that feel tired or dry

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Needing eye drops regularly

  • Discomfort worsens throughout the day

What Causes Dry Eyes?

While over 80% of dry eye cases are due to blocked oil glands in the eyelids — a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction or evaporative dry eye — other factors can also cause this syndrome. These include:

1. Gender

the majority of dry eye sufferers are women. This tends to be caused by hormonal changes, whether through the use of contraceptives, pregnancy or menopause.

2. Age

there’s a higher prevalence of DES in those over 50 years of age

3. Environment

dry wind, dry air and dry climates can evaporate the tears. Home and car heaters, air conditioners, fans and hair dryers also cause tears to evaporate.

4. Medication

these include antidepressants, decongestants and blood pressure medications.

5. Auto-immune

disorders

Sjogren’s disease and arthritis, among others.
